Plumbing License Renewal Requirements
To maintain an active license, Master Plumbers must meet strict compliance conditions set by the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers. State regulations mandate that all licensees complete five hours of continuing education through a Board-approved sponsor before the June 30 expiration date of every odd-numbered year. To satisfy potential state audits from the Division of Consumer Affairs, professionals are legally required by N.J.A.C. 13:32-6.1 to retain their official continuing education certificate of completion as proof of compliance for a period of four years.
Our Plumbing license renewal course fully satisfies this state educational mandate. The program provides the exact Board-approved training hours, which includes the legally required one hour of State Statutes and Rules, and the official documentation you need to confidently file your New Jersey renewal application.
-
If you are not currently an active license holder, you will first need to obtain one. To get a New Jersey Master Plumber license, you must meet the required work experience and educational standards set by the State Board. When applying, you must provide documentation verifying that you have completed a four-year registered apprenticeship program, gained one year of practical experience as a Journeyman plumber, and passed the state-administered trade, business, and law exams.
If you’re just beginning your career and need the hands-on education to start your path, our Plumber Training Program is designed to teach you the foundational skills needed to enter the trade and begin your apprenticeship journey toward becoming a licensed Master Plumber.

Under New Jersey state regulations (N.J.A.C. 13:32A-4.4), dual license holders are not required to take two entirely separate five-hour continuing education courses. The State allows the four hours of core trade and code education to overlap between your Master Plumber and Master HVACR renewal requirements. To fulfill the mandates for both the Plumbing Board and the HVACR Board, you simply need to complete the standard five-hour course for your primary license, plus a supplemental one-hour continuing education class focused specifically on the State Statutes and Rules (Law) governing your secondary license.
Our program makes this easy. You take this complete 5-hour Plumbing CE course, and then add-on our 1-hour HVACR Law CE course to fully satisfy the state requirements for both licenses. Learn more about our 1-Hour HVACR Law CE for NJ Dual License Renewal.
NJ Plumbing CE Class Curriculum
This renewal course is designed for New Jersey Master Plumbers who need to complete their five hours of continuing education. The curriculum is strictly aligned with State Board mandates, covering the required one hour of State Statutes and Rules alongside four hours of trade-specific code and safety training. We also prepare you for the upcoming transition to the 2024 National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC), ensuring you are ready for the state's impending six-month grace period. Key topics include:
New Jersey Plumbing Laws & Rules (N.J.S.A. 45:14C-1 & N.J.A.C. 13:32)
Bona Fide Representative Duties & Liability
2021 NSPC Code Review & NJ UCC Amendments (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15)
Upcoming 2024 NSPC Changes: Water Demand Calculator & Wet Venting
OSHA Trenching, Excavation, and Confined Space Safety (29 CFR 1926)
-
Module 1: NJ Plumbing Laws & Administrative Rules (1 Hour) This module provides a comprehensive review of the State Plumbing Licensing Law (N.J.S.A. 45:14C-1) and Board rules (N.J.A.C. 13:32). We focus heavily on the strict legal responsibilities of a Bona Fide Representative, including the 10% ownership requirement (N.J.A.C. 13:32-3.2) and liability acceptance. Topics include:
Proper vehicle identification and advertising compliance.
Subcontracting notification rules and permit procurement.
Supervision ratios for Journeymen and Apprentices.
Avoiding regulatory violations that trigger $3,000 surety bond actions.
Module 2: NSPC Code Review & 2024 Transition (1 Hour) A practical breakdown of the NSPC as modified by the NJ Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15). We analyze the most frequent UCC plumbing violations, such as improper wet venting, trap seal loss, and faulty pipe sloping, and provide field-tested solutions. We also prepare you for major 2024 NSPC updates, including:
Chapter 12 Revisions: Updated rules for wet venting and the relocation of Air Admittance Valve (AAV) sizing.
Chapter 7 Fixtures: New provisions for all-gender toilet facilities and adult changing stations.
Appendix G: Implementing the new IAPMO Water Demand Calculator for efficient pipe sizing.
Appendix M: Balancing water temperatures to prevent scalding while mitigating Legionella bacteria growth.
Module 3: OSHA Job Site Safety for Plumbers (3 Hours) Plumbing contractors face unique, high-risk hazards. This deep dive into OSHA 29 CFR 1926 standards bridges the gap between complex regulations and practical job site implementation to keep your workforce safe and prevent costly citations.
Trenching & Excavation (Subpart P): Duties of the "Competent Person," soil classification (Type A, B, and C), and rules for shoring, shielding, and trench boxes.
Confined Spaces (Subpart AA): Differentiating permit vs. non-permit spaces (e.g., manholes, HVAC pits), atmospheric testing, and non-entry rescue equipment.
Fall Protection (Subpart M): The 6-foot rule in construction, guardrails, hole covers, and Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS).
Hazard Communication (HazCom): Managing Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for PVC primers, drain cleaners, and soldering gases.
