Pennsylvania CPO Certification Overview

CPO Certification in Pennsylvania is widely used to train pool and spa operators, even though the state does not require a specific operator credential. Pennsylvania regulates public pools through the PA Department of Health’s Public Bathing Place Program, which establishes statewide standards for water quality, safety, chemical handling, and operational management.

While CPO Certification is not mandated statewide, it is the most recognized and commonly preferred credential for operators of public, commercial, community, hotel, fitness center, municipal, and seasonal pools across Pennsylvania.

Allegheny County is the exception. Allegheny County requires public pools to be supervised by a trained and certified operator under the Allegheny County Health Department Article IX regulations. CPO Certification is the primary credential used to meet this requirement throughout Pittsburgh and surrounding municipalities.

The Training Center’s CPO Certification Course is fully online, PHTA approved, and accepted across Pennsylvania, including facilities in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Allentown, and Erie.
