Is a CPO Certification Required in NC?
Yes, a CPO certification is required statewide in North Carolina for anyone responsible for operating public or commercial pools and spas. The state mandates that all public and commercial pools have a certified operator to ensure safety and compliance with health regulations. According to the North Carolina General Statutes, section 130A-281 and 130A-282, no public swimming pool may be opened for use unless the owner or operator has obtained an operation permit issued by the Department pursuant to rules adopted under G.S. 130A-282. The Commission is required to adopt and the Department to enforce rules concerning the construction and operation of public swimming pools, including requirements for operation and safety, water quality and testing, and chemical storage.
With hundreds of regulated pools in cities and towns across NC, pool operators must be trained in maintaining proper water chemistry, managing filtration systems, and following local codes.
