Is a CPO Certification Required in NJ?
Yes, a CPO certification is required statewide in New Jersey for anyone responsible for operating public or commercial pools and spas. The state mandates that all public and commercial pools have a certified operator to ensure safety and compliance with health regulations. According to the New Jersey State Sanitary Code, N.J.A.C. 8:26-5.2(c), the maintenance and mechanical operation of a swimming pool must be under the supervision of a trained pool operator who has completed a pool operator course and holds certification from a Department of Health-approved organization. The CPO Certification is one of the recognized credential, as listed in Appendix A of the New Jersey state code.
With hundreds of regulated pools in cities and towns across NJ, operators must be trained in maintaining proper water chemistry, managing filtration systems, and following local codes.
