Is a CPO Certification Required in AZ?
No, the state of Arizona does not require CPO certification for all pool operators, although certain Arizona counties have specific mandates:
Pima County: According to Pima County Code Title 8, Chapter 8.32, Section 8.32.240, any person who engages in the operation of a public or semi-public swimming pool must obtain an operator's certificate issued by the health officer. Each public pool, while in operation, must have a certified operator on duty, and the owner(s) of each semi-public pool must designate a certified operator who will be on duty or on call. Note: Pima County does not currently permit virtual or online testing for certification.
Cochise County: Cochise County requires public and semi-public aquatic facilities to have a certified pool operator. Online testing is also not permitted in Cochise County, so certification must be completed in person for operators in this area.
Even in counties without specific mandates, obtaining a CPO certification is strongly recommended to ensure proper pool maintenance, safety, and compliance with health regulations.
Our online course is recognized throughout most of Arizona, making it the most efficient and accessible way to earn your certification—outside of counties like Pima and Cochise that require in-person testing. This flexible format allows pool professionals to train at their own pace while meeting local operational standards.
CPO Virtual Training Eligibility in AZ
CPO Certification is not required statewide in Arizona, but it is mandated in counties like Pima and Cochise, which do not allow virtual testing. Online certification is available and accepted in all other areas across Arizona.
